SAP Announces €20 Billion Sovereign Cloud Investment in Europe
SAP unveiled plans to invest more than €20 billion over the next decade to build sovereign cloud infrastructure across Europe. The German software giant aims to create a self-contained ecosystem—from hardware to cloud services—designed specifically for AI and data control within EU borders.
The initiative includes a new infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) platform, challenging the dominance of Microsoft and Amazon in this space. SAP will offer both cloud-based and on-premise deployment options, enabling businesses to maintain complete data sovereignty without relying on third-party providers.
"Innovation and sovereignty cannot be two separate things—they need to come together," said Thomas Saueressig, SAP board member overseeing customer services. The MOVE directly addresses GDPR compliance requirements while ensuring European firms retain access to cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence.
